Interfaith dialogue and action: counter-narratives to radicalisation, violent extremism and terrorism

Countering radicalisation and violent extremism in Kenya requires a coordinated inter-faith approach.

The recent attacks on Kenya by al-Shabaab have once again raised the issue of inter-religious violence in the country. The brutal attacks, aimed at triggering violent conflicts between Muslims and Christians, have worsened relations between these communities.

Beyond interfaith dialogue, successful counter-radicalisation against violent extremism demands that religious leaders, both Christian and Muslim, develop and implement joint counter-narratives. This will enable a better response to counter militants’ ideologies currently benefiting groups like al-Shabaab. The event will assess whether an intra-faith approach can ease inter-religious tensions and help counter extremist and radical narratives. By guiding the current narrative away from dangerous pronouncements by terrorist groups, communities can re-start genuine interfaith dialogue and action.
