From Madlanga revelations to criminal justice reform

How can South Africa turn evidence of corruption and organised crime infiltration into meaningful institutional reform and stronger accountability?

Madlanga Commission proceedings leave no doubt that police corruption and capture of the criminal justice system by organised crime groups need urgent attention. After nearly two decades of high-level corruption in South Africa, the National Anti-Corruption Advisory Council in 2025 recommended establishing an Office of Public Integrity as a new, independent anti-corruption body.

How might Madlanga Commission findings impact this proposal? What reforms are needed to protect the integrity of the criminal justice system, disrupt organised criminal networks and strengthen accountability?
