Driving maritime security in the Horn of Africa

Using IGAD’s maritime strategy, states can develop secure and sustainable blue economies.

For states in the Horn of Africa, maritime security is an ever-changing, enduring challenge. In response, the region’s Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD) developed an Integrated Maritime Strategy in 2015 that reflects a collective will to tackle regional maritime priorities.

This seminar is co-hosted by the ISS and IGAD to enhance the visibility of the strategy and encourage its implementation by the seven IGAD member states that have endorsed it. Speakers will also consider how the maritime strategy aligns with the African Union’s 2050 Africa’s Integrated Maritime Strategy and the Lomé Charter.

The seminar builds on a partnership between IGAD and ISS aimed at developing African maritime security governance architecture and sustainable blue economies.
