Democracy in trouble: Tanzania’s 2025 general elections

With the two main opposition parties out of the race, Tanzania’s ruling party will be virtually unchallenged.

Tanzania’s general elections on 29 October take place amidst significant political uncertainties and a constrained democratic space. Under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party has strengthened its hold, disqualifying the main opposition parties, CHADEMA and ACT-Wazalendo, from the presidential race.

Join our seminar to discuss Tanzania’s political and electoral context, and the lessons on democracy and governance for countries in the region.
