Chemical and biological weapons: a new approach for a new era

International concern is increasing about emerging trends in the use of chemical and biological weapons. The recent Chemical Weapons Convention review conference highlighted some of the current challenges being faced by countries responding to threats posed by the proliferation and use of chemical weapons. Biological weapons also pose a challenge for control. As countries focus on the threat of “dirty wars” fought with non-conventional weapons it is becoming increasingly important that policy makers focus on these issues in South Africa. This workshop will address these issues through presentations and discussion. The workshop is open to all, please RSVP using the contact details below.

About the speakers

Dr Jean Pascal Zanders is the Director of the Bioweapons Prevention Project and is the project co-ordinator of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute’s chemical and biological warfare research project.

Chandré Gould is a researcher at the Centre for Conflict Resolution in Cape Town. She is co-author of the book “Project Coast: Apartheid’s chemical and biological warfare programme” which provides an historical account of South Africa’s past CBW programme. She is also co-author of “Secrets and Lies: Wouter Basson and South Africa’s chemical and biological warfare programme” which provides an account of the trial of Dr Basson.
