Chad and Sudan - Conflict Without Borders

Presented by the African Security Analysis Programme

Presenters: Mr Richard Cornwell, Senior Research Associate and Ms Mariam Bibi Jooma, Researcher, Africa Security Analysis Programme

As the Darfur crisis continues unabated, the conflict in neighbouring Chad has intensified. This has raised questions about the viability the European Union Force (EUFOR) already being deployed in the region as well as the realistic possibilities of success for the United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).

This seminar aims to provide a historical context to the conflict between the two countries with the aim of highlighting what are ‘zones of conflict’ rather than discrete inter-state rivalries. Both the micro and macro processes of politics will be addressed, followed by a discussion of the international community’s responses to the regional crises.
