An inside view of the South African Police Service

Former SAPS major-general Jeremy Vearey will discuss the potential and the perils facing South African policing.

Former Western Cape detective head, Jeremy Vearey, served at a senior level in the South African Police Service (SAPS) since its establishment in 1995. He has a unique insight into the successes and challenges of transforming a brutal police force into an effective, democratic police service.

Using his new memoir Into Dark Water as a foundation, this seminar will explore the past, present and future of South African policing through the eyes of one of its most experienced and thoughtful former officers.

This seminar is co-hosted by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Centre of Criminology, University of Cape Town.

Chairperson: Dr Andrew Faull, Senior Researcher, Justice and Violence Prevention, ISS

Speakers:

  • Jeremy Vearey, ex-SAPS major-general and author of Into Dark Water: a memoir
