Africa’s climate and development future after COP27

Can the COP27 outcomes help Africa frame climate change as an alternative development pathway?

This dialogue will reflect on the outcomes of COP27 for Africa. It will interrogate how the continent can shift to an alternative development pathway by combining poverty reduction and economic growth with increased resilience to climate change effects. Rather than focusing on Africa’s risks and vulnerabilities, the aim is to approach climate change as an opportunity to transform sectors and unlock new avenues for development.

The workshop will launch the Institute for Security Studies’ (ISS) new report: Africa’s positioning in global climate change negotiations.

The full workshop programme will be available on the ISS website in due course.

Themes:

  • Reflections from Sharm-el-Sheikh: What was at stake? What did we achieve? Where to from here?
  • Building resilience in a changing climate: Why climate change is not just an environmental issue in Africa
  • Integrating climate change in the development conversation: How can climate investments help meet Africa’s socio-economic needs?
  • Realising development opportunities: What platforms are available to address climate change challenges and realise development opportunities?
