Africa’s role in the BBNJ Agreement: high-level roundtable
This event explores pathways to strengthen Africa’s readiness for the BBNJ Treaty as it nears entry into force.
The Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement, adopted under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, marks a major step forward in global ocean governance. The agreement is set to reach the 60 ratification threshold necessary for entry into force by the 80th UN General Assembly from 23–29 September.
With over 35 African countries having signed the agreement, and nine ratifying it, Africa is well-positioned to play an influential role in shaping the agreement’s entry into force and implementation. But further progress is needed to secure widespread ratification and to prepare for effective participation in the early conferences of the parties.
This roundtable discussion will bring senior policymakers together to assess progress, build momentum and identify pathways to chart a united continental implementation approach. It provides a timely opportunity for Africa to ensure the continent is positioned to influence the early decisions that will shape the agreement’s future.
This event is co-hosted by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and the Institute for Security Studies, under the patronage of the Republic of Seychelles, co-chair of the High-Level Coalition on the BBNJ Treaty and Chair of the African Island Climate Commission.
On the agenda:
- Linking the treaty to Africa’s climate and development goals
- Enhancing regional coordination ahead of UN milestones
- Shaping a unified governance approach
- Unlocking political, technical and financial support
