36th AU summit: confronting Africa’s security challenges?

Summit decisions will be discussed against the backdrop of security priorities and this year’s focus on continental free trade.

In 2023 Africa must tackle several security priorities including renewed clashes in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and attempts by leaders and ruling parties to remain in office through unconstitutional means. Vital policies also need resolution, such as how to finance peace support operations, contestations around the position of African Union (AU) chair in 2023, and reform of the AU.

This seminar will discuss the AU summit’s major outcomes in the context of these challenges and the AU’s theme of the year – the African Continental Free Trade Area.

This event is co-hosted by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS). Simultaneous English-French interpretation will be provided for this event.
