ISS announces leadership transition

As the ISS marks its 35th anniversary, Executive Director Fonteh Akum leaves the institute well-positioned with a new strategy and strong partnerships.

Pretoria, South Africa – Fonteh Akum, Executive Director of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), has decided to step down from his leadership role, effective 30 April 2026.

During his five-year tenure, Fonteh has led the ISS with vision and a deep commitment to advancing peace and security across Africa. Through his commitment to transparent and accountable governance, he has guided the organisation whilst significantly enhancing its profile on the continent and globally.

‘Fonteh has steered the ISS with distinction during an exceptionally challenging period,’ said Jakkie Cilliers, Chair of the ISS Board of Trustees. ‘His pan-African vision, strategic leadership and collaborative approach have strengthened the institute's position as a pillar of research-based analysis and technical support across the continent. He leaves the ISS well-positioned as we celebrate our 35th anniversary with a new five-year strategy in place.’

Under Fonteh’s leadership, a team of over 130 staff from 20 African countries has built robust partnerships, championed human security and maintained the ISS’ reputation as one of Africa's most respected policy research organisations.

The Board of Trustees will shortly launch a recruitment process to identify and appoint the next executive director who will carry forward the ISS' work in advancing Africa's security and development goals.
