ISS Press Release: Ethiopian Government and ISS Sign Host Country Agreement
Addis Ababa - 14 March, 2012 - The Host Country Agreement (HCA) between the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia was signed on 14 March 2012, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The Agreement was signed by the State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Berhane Gebre-Kristos on behalf of the Host government and Dr Jakkie Cilliers, Executive Director for the ISS. Also present at the signing ceremony were the Regional Director, ISS-Addis Ababa, Ambassador Olusegun Akinsanya, the Programme Manager, Conflict Prevention and Risk Analysis (CPRA), ISS-Addis Ababa, Dr Mehari Taddele Maru and a host of Foreign Ministry officials, including Ambassador Megash Kbiret and Mr Elias Melaku, both of the Directorate of International Organisations.

In his brief remarks before the signing ceremony, the State Minister congratulated the Executive Director and ISS staff for the good work they are doing with the African Union on peace and security as well as other topical issues of interest to the continent. Ambassador Berhane expressed his particular interest and appreciation for the conferences, public seminars and workshops regularly organized by ISS-Addis for the benefit of diplomats and officials, and other stakeholders in Addis Ababa. He also assured of the continued assistance and collaboration of his Ministry and the Government of Ethiopia in the work of the ISS.
In his own remarks, Dr Jakkie Cilliers thanked the State Minister and the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia for their unflinching support since the establishment of the ISS office in 2005. He reiterated that the ISS, as a Pan-African leading policy research institution and think-tank, continues to focus on timely and balanced analysis of human security issues in Africa, and disseminates its research outputs to policy makers, the AU, Regional Economic Communities and other stakeholders within and beyond Africa. He also expressed the desire to continue working with stakeholders at national, regional and continental levels in the areas of conflict prevention, education, training and capacity building as manifested in the new African Centre for Peace and Security Training (ACPST), recently established as part of the ISS Addis Ababa office for the benefit of mid-career diplomats, officials and military officers from African Countries.
