Sarah Meek

Sarah Meek first joined ISS in 1996 as a senior researcher with the Arms Management Programme. After leaving ISS in 1999 to manage the security and peacebuilding programme at International Alert in London, she returned in January 2002 to head the Arms Management Programme in ISS Pretoria. Sarah played a central role in developing the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA), a global coalition of NGOs working on firearm injury/mortality prevention through policy change and practical action at the international, regional and national levels. Under her direction the Arms Management Programme became a pre-eminent arms control and disarmament unit focusing on applied policy research in Africa. Sarah was also a Small Arms Survey (SAS) International Programme Council member, and forged a strong working relationship with SAS. In early 2005 she was promoted to Head of Development at ISS. Sarah was truly dedicated to ISS’s work and played a significant role in the development of the organization over several years.

Sarah passed away on 26 October 2006.
