The South African Crime Quarterly is excited to announce the return to a quarterly publication model in 2025. We invite scholars, practitioners and policymakers to contribute to the upcoming editions. SA Crime Quarterly publishes research articles, case notes on recent court judgements, interviews on topical issues in criminology and public policy, and book reviews.
The 2025 editions are planned as follows:
March edition: Open focus
Rolling submissions, with earlier submissions prioritised for review and publication.
June edition: Policing
This edition seeks to connect scholarship and practical insights on policing, focusing on work that translates research into actionable policy and strategy.
We particularly welcome articles on:
- Evidence-based policing and its applications in the Global South
- Institutional reforms and organisational culture in policing
- Collaborative approaches in law enforcement
- Understanding and responding to firearm crime
- Strategies for fostering community trust and legitimacy
- Technology and innovation in crime prevention
- Challenges of police accountability and oversight
Priority will be given to submissions that:
- Offer empirical evidence and practical recommendation
- Propose innovative solutions to contemporary policing issues
- Analyse systemic challenges in policing
- Reflect South African and broader African contexts
Submission deadline: 10 March 2025
September edition: Preventing violence – theory, evidence, policy and practice
This special edition is dedicated to theory, research, policy and practice related to the prevention of violence.
We welcome articles that:
- Present the findings from research on interventions, programmes and practices that reduce inter-personal violence
- Explore and critically engage with the theories, assumptions and frameworks applied in the field of violence prevention
- Evaluate or critically reflect on programming, practices and policies to address violence.
This edition locates itself within a growing body of intellectual and policy engagement with violence prevention in the global south.
Submission deadline: 10 June 2025
December edition: Anti-corruption
This edition will focus on corruption.
We particularly welcome articles on:
- Sectoral and institution-based analyses of corruption
- Prevention of corruption, including technology and innovation
- Corruption and anti-corruption in the private sector
- The connections between corruption, organised crime and violence
- Case studies of successful anti-corruption projects in South Africa or Africa
- Case studies of ‘islands of integrity’ e.g., municipalities or institutions that are working in South Africa or Africa
Priority will be given to submissions that:
- Analyse systemic challenges relating to corruption
- Offer empirical evidence and practical recommendations
- Propose innovative solutions to contemporary corruption and anti-corruption issues
- Reflect South African and African issues and solutions
