ISS Seminar: Understanding Terrorism in Africa: In Search For An African ‘Voice’
Johannesburg, 6-7 November 2006

 

The aims for this seminar will be to:

 

  • Highlight the threat of terrorism on Africa’s human security;
  • Assess the vulnerability and challenges to preventing and combating terrorism threats in Africa;
  • Analyze the impact of terrorism on Africa’s development;
  • Review the existing partnerships for preventing and combating terrorism in Africa, particularly the relations between citizens, civil society, governments and international partners;
  • Analyze the impact of counter-terrorism measures on African economies, state-citizen relations, and on Africa’s international relations; and
  • Generate and propose ideas on preventing and combating terrorism in Africa, and make recommendations for more effective counter-terrorism approaches that reflect Africa’s human security interests. 


The seminar will have panels focusing on:

  • African understanding of terrorism,
  • The impact of terrorism and counter-terrorism on Africa,
  • Building Partnerships for Preventing and Combating Terrorism in Africa,
  • Challenges of Preventing and Combating Terrorism in Africa,
  • Search of a comprehensive counter terrorism strategy, and
  • Recommendations and way forward.
