Time is running out for presidential elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo to be held within the timeframes mandated by the constitution.
The electoral commission’s recent announcement that it needs 18 months for the revision of voter rolls indicates that the November 2016 deadline mandated by the constitution will not be met – a proposition that the political opposition has rejected. The delay places the international community, which is expected to finance part of the election process, in a quandary.
Increasing incidents of human rights violations and crackdowns on politicians and activists also complicates matters.
Given these challenges, what can be done to prevent a deadlock in the country? Stephanie Wolters, head of the Conflict Prevention and Analysis division, will present this week’s View on Africa.
