Researcher, Justice and Violence Prevention

The Institute for Security Studies’ Justice and Violence Prevention programme seeks an experienced and committed researcher, based in the greater Cape Town area.

 

The researcher will work with a team of experts on criminal justice and corruption in South Africa. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated analytical thinker with strong project coordination, communication and problem-solving skills.

 

This is a work-from-home position. The researcher will report to the Project Manager.

 

Overview of duties

  • Coordinate and oversee the implementation and evaluation of multiple projects
  • Initiate, plan and undertake primary and secondary research
  • Maintain proactive relationships with key partners and relevant regional and international organisations
  • Assist the programme with administrative and logistical activities, including but not limited to event coordination, budgets, meetings and internal processes
  • Help implement effective monitoring and evaluation plans


Overview of requirements

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline; qualifications in project management will be desirable
  • At least five years of relevant work experience in a policy, research, government or other relevant professional environment
  • A track record in undertaking research on criminal justice, corruption or related issues
  • Good relationship-building and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with diverse groups, including in government and civil society
  • Excellent written and verbal English skills
  • Strong project coordination skills, including design and implementation of complex projects/events
  • Working knowledge of communication and social media platforms
  • Strong planning, monitoring and evaluation skills, and understanding of results-based management and reporting
  • Ability to work independently, under pressure and to deadline
  • Willingness to travel within Cape Town and South Africa


This opportunity is only open to South African citizens or candidates with valid work permits based in Cape Town. The contract will be until December 2026, with the possibility of renewal. A competitive salary is offered.
