Researcher, Central Africa Observatory on Organised Crime and Violence

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) seeks two researchers to join the Central Africa Observatory on Organised Crime and Violence based in Yaoundé, Cameroon. The observatory is a partnership of the ISS and the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC). It aims to enhance the responses of policymakers, law enforcement agencies and civil society to organised crime and violence in the region.

 

The researchers will report to the Project Coordinator.

 

Overview of duties

  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative research and analysis on organised crime, corruption, crime and security in Central Africa
  • Produce and disseminate research findings in formats appropriate to target audiences, including publications, briefings, seminars and visual media
  • Maintain proactive relationships with key partners and relevant regional and international stakeholders
  • Conduct media interviews
  • Present research findings at ISS events and other relevant forums


Overview of requirements

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in the social sciences, criminology, political science, international relations or a related field
  • Three to five years’ work experience and in-depth understanding of organised crime, corruption and crime in Central Africa
  • Track record of relevant single-authored publications, media commentary and public speaking
  • Strong networking and interpersonal and skills, in particular the ability to work in partnership with international and continental organisations, governments and civil society
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in French; proficiency in written and verbal English will be an advantage
  • Ability to travel within Central Africa
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel


The contract will be until December 2026, with the possibility of renewal subject to programme requirements, funding and satisfactory performance. A competitive salary is offered.
