The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) seeks two senior researchers to work on organised crime and violence in Central Africa. The Central Africa Observatory Project is a partnership between the ISS and the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC).
The senior researchers will undertake primary and secondary research and analysis, develop policy recommendations based on the findings, and actively communicate results through written products, briefings and events. The senior researchers will work remotely, and report to the ISS Project Coordinator.
Overview of duties
- Stay abreast of organised crime and violence matters in Central Africa
- Initiate, plan and undertake primary and secondary research
- Produce and disseminate research findings to target audiences using appropriate formats such as publications, media
- interviews, briefings and seminars
- Convene seminars, closed briefings and roundtables
- Build and maintain proactive relationships with key partners, donors and government actors
- Be responsive to changes in the environment and opportunities to support policy development and implementation as they arise
- Assist in identifying new opportunities for funding, draft concept notes and proposals, and manage a budget
- Contribute to ISS’ work in general
Overview of requirements
- Master’s degree in a relevant discipline
- At least 7 years relevant work experience in research and policy, with at least 3 years working on transnational organised crime, corruption and crime and security
- Track record of establishing networks, preferably regional or multi-national, and proficiency with online networking platforms
- Track record of working on transnational organised crime and security policy in Central Africa, including an understanding of political integration and policymaking issues and processes
- Experience working with decision makers in regional and international institutions
- Proficiency in speaking and writing in French and English
- Communication track record with media and research organisations in Central Africa
- Ability to work independently, remotely and finalise multiple deliverables
- Available to travel regionally and internationally
The contracts will be for 2 years and may be renewed subject to funding and satisfactory performance.
