ISS Senior Researcher and Project Coordinator, based in Yaoundé

The ISS is seeking an experienced Senior Researcher and Project Coordinator to manage and coordinate the ISS’ contribution to the establishment and functioning of a Central Africa Observatory on Organised Crime and Violence. 

 

The Central African Observatory is a partnership project of the ISS and the Global Initiative against Transnational Organised Crime (GI-TOC). It aims to enhance the response of policymakers, law enforcement agencies and civil society to organised crime and violence in the region.

 

The position will be based in Yaoundé, Cameroon.

 

Overview of duties

  • Work as an integral part of the ISS and GI-TOC leadership team
  • Manage project and research design and implementation, capacity building, budgets and expenditure, and M&E reporting
  • Ensure ethical primary and secondary research, develop policy recommendations, and communicate results through writing, presentations and briefings, and media commentary
  • Provide peer review of ISS and GI-TOC colleagues’ work
  • Network and liaise with stakeholders and donors to build profile, shape decisions and disseminate results
  • Help establish and mainten a network of research organisations in Central Africa
  • Establish good working relationships with government agencies and stakeholders
  • Coordinate regular engagements with regional and national entities
  • Contribute to capacity building activities with key institutions in Central Africa


Overview of requirements

  • Masters in relevant discipline (governance, international development, security and policing)
  • At least 7 years relevant work experience in research and policy, with at least 3 years working on transnational organised crime, corruption and crime and security
  • At least 5 years experience in leading and managing high performing teams
  • Track record of establishing networks, preferably regional or multi-national, and proficiency with online networking platforms
  • Track record of working on transnational organised crime and security policy in Central Africa, including networks with regional
  • institutions, and an understanding of political integration and policymaking issues and processes
  • Experience working with decision makers in regional and international institutions
  • Proficiency in speaking and writing in French and English
  • Communication track record with media and research organisations in Central Africa
  • Ability to work independently, remotely and deliver on multiple priorities
  • Ability to problem-solve in complex regional contexts to ensure programme delivery


This position involves travel. The contract will be for 24 months, and may be renewed subject to funding and satisfactory performance.
