ISS Dakar: Junior Fellow

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) seeks a Junior Research Fellow to assist in conducting research, writing short articles and hosting events on peace and security issues in West Africa. The Junior Fellow will be based in the ISS Regional Office for West Africa and the Sahel in Dakar, Senegal and will work under the supervision of a Senior Researcher.

This position is open to nationals of Senegal only.

Overview of duties

● Assist the team by providing background research

● Design and undertake desk and field research under the guidance of the Senior Researcher

● Assist with the preparation and organisation of workshops in Dakar and selected countries

● Attend seminars/workshops/conferences and prepare relevant reports

● Prepare minutes of meetings

● Conduct and present a weekly review of political and security developments in the region

● Write policy articles under the supervision of the Senior Researcher

● Undertake additional tasks related to the project as assigned by the Senior Researcher

Overview of requirements

● A national of Senegal

● Under 30 years of age

● Master’s degree in anthropology, sociology, politics, law, history, international relations or a related field

● Good organisational skills, self-motivated and reliable

● Interest and knowledge in peace, security, governance, terrorism and violent extremism

● Fluent in either French or English (written and spoken); a good command of one or more local languages would be an asset

● Good computer skills (Microsoft Office, Internet applications and Prezi)

● Ability to work under pressure in a multicultural environment

Duration

The assumption of duties is planned for 20 July 2026. The length of the contract is 12 months. The Junior Fellow will receive a monthly stipend. He or she will be based in the ISS Dakar office for the duration of the contract.
