The ISS seeks a motivated senior researcher to join its dynamic team working on peace, security and development issues in Africa. The senior researcher will join the African Peace and Security Governance (APSG) programme, which tracks regional and continental developments, monitors the African Peace and Security Architecture and provides multi-faceted support to the African Union (AU), regional economic communities (RECs) and member states.
The senior researcher will conduct research, develop policy recommendations, provide technical assistance and training, liaise with policymakers, and effectively communicate research results to a wide range of stakeholders. Experience in fundraising, tracking budgets and monitoring and evaluation are also needed.
The senior researcher will report to the head of the APSG programme.
Overview of duties
- Track key developments related to peace, security and governance in Africa and their impact on continental decision-making processes
- Conduct primary and secondary research and disseminate findings to target stakeholders
- Write monthly articles for the ISS’ Peace and Security Council Report
- Monitor developments related to the AU’s membership in the G21
- Provide technical support and training to the AU
- Manage research projects and support junior staff
- Maintain close relations with AU member states, partner organisations, regional institutions and international stakeholders
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to ensure strategic collaboration and uptake of policy recommendations
- Organise and facilitate high-level dialogues, seminars, briefings and roundtables and present research findings internally and externally
- Give media interviews and maintain productive relations with the media
- Identify new funding opportunities and draft grant proposals
Overview of requirements
- Master’s degree or PhD in international studies, peace and conflict resolution, political science, security studies, law or related field
- At least 7 years experience in a policy, research, government, training or other relevant professional environment, preferably with a focus on governance, peace and security issues in Africa
- Excellent understanding of Africa’s Peace and Security Architecture, the AU and Africa’s policymaking space
- Proven networking and interpersonal skills, and the ability to partner with international and continental organisations, governments and civil society
- Experience in budget management and financial administration
- Experience in monitoring and evaluation
- Track record of publications, media engagement and international public speaking
- Excellent English verbal and written skills; proficiency in French will be an advantage
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Willingness to travel in the region and beyond
