Training for Peace (TfP) is a capacity support programme to the African Union Commission (AUC) funded by the Government of Norway. The ISS’ office in Addis Ababa seeks a dynamic researcher to join its TfP team. The researcher will conduct research and support TfP’s training engagements, coordinate stakeholder relationships and help manage and administer project activities. The researcher will report to the TfP Project Manager.
Overview of duties
- Perform policy research and analysis on peace and security issues
- Produce and disseminate research findings through appropriate formats
- Actively contribute to the TfP’s training and capacity building objectives, including among others: supporting the development of training packages; conducting and facilitating training courses; and compiling data for quality control, monitoring, evaluation and feedback on courses and training workshops
- Coordinate the implementation of monitoring and evaluation plans for the TfP project
- Assist with administrative and logistical activities, including but not limited to: event coordination; budgets; meetings; and internal ISS administrative processes
- Network and liaise with stakeholders to build ISS’ profile, shape decision making and ensure engagement with research results
Overview of requirements
- A minimum of a Master’s degree in social sciences, political science, international relations or a related field
- At least five years’ relevant work experience on, and an in-depth understanding of, the African Peace and Security Architecture, preferably with a focus on gender, peace operations and peacebuilding processes of the AU and the RECs/RMs
- Previous experience and skills in developing training materials as well as supporting, delivering and facilitating training
- Track record of relevant single-authored publications, media commentary and public speaking at international forums
- Strong networking, interpersonal and communication skills, in particular the ability to work in partnership with the African Union, the RECs/RMs, governments and civil society
- Understanding and experience in monitoring and evaluation
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; strong skills in French or any other AU language will be an advantage
- Ability to travel extensively
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
The contract will be until 30 September 2027, and may be renewed pending a demonstration of satisfactory performance. A competitive salary is offered.
