ACPST course: Managing elections within a context of diversity

The ISS trained civil society representatives on the importance of broad participation in Côte d'Ivoire's elections in October.

The workshop focused on participatory democracy and the respect of human rights in the Ivorian electoral context. By exploring the notion of Ivoirité – what it means to be Ivorian, which formed the basis of conflict in the previous elections – participants and facilitators highlighted practical steps for ensuring all factions of society participate in the electoral process.

Participants argued that political parties and the Independent Electoral Commission should focus on promoting ethical decision making, strengthening internal accountability for misconduct and promoting public participation from in and outside the country.

The training workshop was chaired by Edouard Yao, head of Action Internationale de Développement Intégral and coordinator of the Réseau de Promotion de la Diversité et la Paix en Côte d’Ivoire.

Speakers were:

  • Eric-Aimé Semien, Président, Observatoire Ivoirien des Droits de l’Homme
  • Salomon Bayoro, Préfet
