ISS Seminar: The Protection of Civilians in Conflict Areas: The Case of the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
Pretoria, 30 September 2009

Hosted by the Peace Missions Programme, ISS Tshwane (Pretoria)

The conflict in North Kivu during 2008 and 2009 has seriously impacted on the security of civilians. Much of the blame has been placed on the UN Mission (MONUC) for not implementing the mandate for the Protection of Civilians. Since the beginning of 2009 MONUC has put in place several measures to stop the violence.

This seminar will seek to evaluate the effectiveness of measures implemented by MONUC to protect the civilian population.
