27 May 2009: ISS Seminar, Pretoria: Madagascar: Addressing the Crisis
ISS Seminar: Madagascar: Addressing the Crisis
Pretoria, 27 May 2009
Â
Hosted by the African Security Analysis Programme
Â
Madagascar’s political history since independence in 1960 has been a troubled one, punctuated by assassinations, coups and disputed elections. President Ravalomanana’s accession to power in 2002 was accompanied by a period of destructive civil disturbance, and his removal in March this year took the form of an unusual putsch. A transitional government has still not been recognised internationally, and SADC and the African Union are exploring ways of returning this massive island republic to constitutional rule.
Â
This seminar will examine the events leading up to the ousting of President Ravalomanana, and will provide expert insights into the political economy of a country too often neglected by international observers. It may also suggest ways in which the current crisis could be turned to good account, providing for the revitalisation of Madagascar’s political life that must underpin any effective development strategy.
