ISS/ISPI International Conference: Towards an African Conflict Prevention Strategy
9-10 March 2009, Addis Ababa

Hosted by the ISS Addis Ababa office and the Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale (ISPI)

The overarching objective of this conference will be to examine various initiatives put in place by the African Union and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) to enhance their conflict prevention strategies. In doing so the conference hopes to contribute to the operationalisation of the evolving African Peace and Security Architecture. Specifically the conference’s objectives are: enhance greater awareness about the African Peace and Security Agenda and its conflict prevention strategies; and identify capacity constraints faced by the African Peace Security Architecture in operationalising its continental warning system.

Selected authors will be invited to make presentations based on their draft work. The papers and conference deliberations will lead to production of policy briefs to be circulated to the AU, EU, UN and Africa’s development partners. About 30 African policymakers, UN officials, AU officials, RECs officials, scholars, and civil society have been invited to participate in the conference.
