ISS 3rd International Conference: Pre-conference workshop: Getting published in peer-reviewed journals

The ISS and South African Crime Quarterly in partnership with the journals Acta Criminologica and Agenda are planning a two-day workshop on 23 and 24 October. The workshop will take place at the University of South Africa’s Kgorong building at their Pretoria Muckleneuk campus.

This workshop is intended for academics and researchers who would like to develop their skills in writing articles and getting published in peer-reviewed journals in the field of criminology.

Academics and researchers from civil society organisations often face tremendous pressure to publish regularly in peer-reviewed, accredited journals.  However, most people find it a difficult and stressful process. This is often because writers don’t know what journals are looking for, or don’t understand how the editorial process works, or perhaps we are not sure about how to go about structuring, writing and referencing an article.

This workshop will bring together a number of experienced and accomplished academics and journal editors including:

  • Prof Anthony Minnaar, editor of Acta Criminologica; Associate Editor (Africa): International Journal of Police Science & Management; Editorial Board: African Security Review; past Editor of Contree: Journal for Local & Regional History
  • Prof Lillian Artz, member of the editorial board of Agenda
  • Dr Chandré Gould, editor of South African Crime Quarterly
  • Prof Elrena van der Spuy, formerly on the editorial boards of Police Practice and Research, Society in Transition and the South African Journal of Criminal Justice
  • Prof Todd Clear, founding editor, Criminology & Public Policy, current editorial board member, Justice Quarterly
  • Dr William Dixon, Keele University, editorial board South African Crime Quarterly
  • Prof Elaine Salo, Director of the Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies, University of Pretoria

The workshop will cover the following issues

  • What journals are looking for;
  • How to write and structure your article;
  • How to approach a journal;
  • How the editorial process works;
  • How to get the most out of a peer review;
  • How to reference correctly and in accordance with journal guidelines for authors.

During the second day participants will be asked to bring an early draft of an article they would like to have published. These articles will be workshopped in small groups led by published authors and journal editors.

Registration fee: R1 000

If you would like to participate in this workshop please contact Chandre Gould ([email protected]) by 15 July.

The venue for this workshop is sponsored by School of Accounting Sciences, UNISA.
