27 May 2008: ISS Seminar, Pretoria: The Scorpions

ISS Seminar on the Scorpions
Pretoria, 27 May 2008

Presented by the ISS Crime, Justice and Politics Programme

Cabinet has approved draft Bills relating to the ANC’s decision to dissolve the Directorate of Special Operations (DSO). Additionally, the Presidency has released the report of the Khampepe Commission for public consumption.

Whilst the prospects for retaining the DSO, popularly known as the Scorpions, appear bleak it is important to pose the following question: To what extent do the findings of the Khampepe Commission weaken or strengthen the ANC’s reasons for dismantling the Scorpions? It must also not be forgotten that there is still the possibility of constitutional and legal challenges to the dismantling of the Scorpions. In fact, there are still so many unanswered questions concerning the status and functioning of the Scorpions during the period when the Bills are being taken through the parliamentary process. For instance, what happens to the cases being pursued by the Scorpions during the period of public consultations?

Against this background, the ISS invites you to attend a Seminar concerning the aforementioned.
