Â
It has been a little over five years since metropolitan police departments were first established in South Africa. Despite relatively small numbers of operational personnel, they are now a familiar part of the policing landscape. With good reason, metro police officers have tended to do better at traffic control than crime prevention, and their relationship with the SAPS has needed attention. This seminar will reflect on achievements and challenges facing these new police organisations.
Â
Speaker: Gareth Newham, advisor to the Gauteng MEC for Safety and Security, will discuss results of research he conducted while at the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation.
Â
The seminar will also launch the latest issue of the ISS’s SA Crime Quarterly, which carries Gareth Newham’s article on the metro police. Other topics in this issue are:
-
Can our public order police still deliver?
-
Policing and the sex industry
-
Xenophobia among Johannesburg’s police
-
Evaluating the Western Cape community courts
