ISS Seminar: For Better or Worse? Considering the Implications of the Sexual Offences Bill
Pretoria, 11 July 2007

The Sexual Offences Bill is in its final stages of being passed into law. The new Bill has been welcomed by the media and those who have advocated for the broadening of the legal definition of the crime of rape. While this aspect of the new law is uncontroversial, other clauses including the compulsory testing of rape suspects based on a request from victims, are far more controversial. In this seminar the three speakers will reflect on some of the difficult and controversial aspects of the Bill.

Speakers:

Steffi Roehrs, Researcher at the Gender, Health & Justice Research Unit of the University of Cape Town:
Positive or negative? Compulsory HIV Testing of Alleged Sexual and Other Offenders

Lisa Vetton, Researcher and policy analyst at the Tshwaranang Legal Advocacy Centre to End Violence Against Women:
New crimes and dull procedures: an overview of the Sexual Offences Bill.

Nicolé Fick, Researcher at the Sex Worker Education and Advocacy Taskforce: The sexual Offences Bill: Unintended consequences
