11 Apr 2007: ISS Seminar, Pretoria: Understanding Crime: The South African Crime and Victimisation Monitoring Tool
ISS Seminar: Understanding Crime:
The South African Crime and Victimisation Monitoring Tool
Pretoria, 11 April 2007
The need for a better understanding of crime together with improved analysis and
intelligence about the problem, has been identified as a priority by stakeholders
ranging from the President in his state of the nation speech, to government’s Justice,
Crime Prevention and Security Cluster, and various civil society-based analysts.
In response to the need for a more comprehensive and accurate analysis of data
available in the public domain, the Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention has
developed a valuable and accessible tool that visually maps a range of data drawn
from official police statistics and national victimisation surveys. The tool enables the
crime picture in all regions, provinces and wards of South Africa to be established,
along with long term trends. The tool reveals remarkable new patterns of criminal
activity, contextualised by valuable demographic and socio-economic data.
The SA Crime and Victimisation Mapping Tool will be demonstrated and discussed at a
public seminar hosted by the ISS.
Speakers: Patrick Burton, Research Director at the Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention,
will provide an introduction and background, and an overview of what is depicted.
Michael O’Donovan, statistician and analyst, Hlakanaphila Analytics, will
highlight some of the trends and demonstrate how the tool works.
