ISS Seminar: Crime Trends and Public Perceptions: What the Latest Statistics Show
Pretoria, 9 March 2007
Â
Events in the past few months have raised questions about a growing wave of public dissatisfaction with crime and government’s response to it. Examples include statements in the media and parliament by the president and cabinet ministers, the aborted FNB media and letter-writing campaign, and increased media reports of vigilantism. There can be little doubt that crime trends and public perceptions on the issue have shifted markedly in the past year. This ISS seminar will review the links between crime and perception, based on the latest available quantitative data, and compare South Africans’ views with those of the public in 17 other African countries.
Â
Speakers:
- Antoinette Louw, senior research fellow at the ISS, will provide an overview of crime trends drawn from available official statistics.
- Prof Robert Mattes, Director, Centre for Social Science Research at UCT, will discuss perceptions of crime and policing based on the Afrobarometer surveys in SA and 17 other African countries.
- Mari Harris, Director and Political Analyst at Markinor, will consider public views of safety and government’s performance gathered from Markinor’s most recent national bi-annual Government Performance Barometer survey.
