ISS Roundtable Workshop: Elections and Conflict Management in Africa
Addis Ababa, 19 June 2008
Â
The Direct Conflict Prevention Programme (DCP) of the ISS Addis Ababa Office would like to cordially invite you to a roundtable workshop entitled Elections and Conflict Management in Africa which will be held on Thursday 19th June 2008, between 9:00 am and 15:30 pm, at the ISS Office, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Â
The twenty first century has witnessed a massive effort by individual states to build strong democracies and improve electoral processes. Africa has, more than other continents, experienced the most dramatic transformation in this regard. This welcome development in a continent long characterized by high levels of poverty and inequality, recurrent and violent conflicts, weak political parties and civil society, has however created new challenges. The roundtable workshop will assess the significant progress that has been made in Africa in terms elections and conflict management. It will also initiate a continent-wide dialogue and an exchange of regional lessons learned. And, it will aim to give impetus to ongoing efforts spearheaded by the African Union to strengthen Africa’s democratic experiment and to address policy gaps in conflict management.
Â
The DCP programme strives to complement and support the work of the African Union (AU) particularly on issues of peace and security. The ISS Public Seminar Series is part of the DCP effort at consensus-building by providing a platform for sharing information, encouraging policy debates on the African peace and security agenda. The aim is to stimulate quality discussion, in-depth and constructive interaction between participants. The presenters are officials of the African Union Commission and academicians from research centers or universities.
