ISS Seminar: Make or Break: Analysis of the 2008 Ghana Elections
Pretoria, 12 December 2008
Â
Hosted by the African Security Analysis Programme
Â
As the year draws to its end, Ghana is gearing up toward a new political dawn. The first Sub-Saharan African country to obtain its independence has held its fifth general elections since the return of democracy in 1992. In a volatile sub-region of West Africa, there is a considerable amount of interest in the Ghanaian electoral process. There is also a considerable level of concerns given the fact that Africa has witnessed in 2008 two major incidents of electoral violence in Kenya and Zimbabwe.
Â
This seminar seeks to shed some light on what these elections might hold for peace and democracy in Ghana. What are the prospects as well as the challenges for a peaceful transfer of power? Is there a reason to fear for the worse? What lessons can we draw from the 2008 electoral process in Ghana?
