23 Jan 2009: ISS Seminar, Pretoria: A Bridge too Far? Making Sense of Complex Developments in the DRC
ISS Seminar: A Bridge too Far? Making Sense of Complex Developments in the DRC
Pretoria, 23 January 2009
Â
Hosted by the African Security Analysis Programme, ISS Tshwane (Pretoria)
Â
The latest developments in the Eastern DRC indicate new efforts by the Congolese and Rwandan Governments to go after the Forces Démocratiques et de Libération du Rwanda (FDLR) in order to find a solution to the biggest threat to peace in the region. At the same time, the split that occurred within Nkunda’s rebel movement, the National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP) poses a risk to the UN-led Nairobi negotiation process which has the backing of the African and international community. Are the new political-military initiatives opening new perspectives for lasting peace in the DRC or are we just witnessing a re-make of the 2002 events?
Â
The seminar aims at giving an update on the current situation and look at possible future scenarios for the DRC and the region.
