15 Dec 2009: ISS Seminar: What are the Scenarios for the future of Sudan?

By invitation only: What are the Scenarios for the future of Sudan?

Imperial Hotel, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
15th of December 2009, 9:30 to 13:00

Following request from the New Sudan Student Association at the University of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the African Conflict Prevention Programme-Addis Ababa (ACPP-Addis) of the ISS Addis Ababa Office, is the organising a seminar entitled, “What are the Scenarios for the future of Sudan?”

Almost five years have passed since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), between the governing National Congress Party (NCP) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).  The CPA stipulated a six-year interim period, power and wealth sharing, a nationwide elections and a referendum that will allow the southerners to choose whether to remain on a united Sudan or secede. But little progress has been made in these areas including territory demarcation and wealth (particularly oil) sharing.  With the election set for April 2010, the coming months will not only be a real test for the leaders of Sudan and their ability to avoid a breakout of a new and devastating civil war but also for the people of the Sudan and the region as a whole.

The seminar will unpack the underlying uncertainties, as well as take stock of the progress made in the implementation of the CPA in order to anticipate the obstacles and opportunities for evading possible political violence.  The seminar aims at encouraging constructive and quality discussion and awareness among the students of New Sudan. With a commitment to promote human security in Africa, ISS supported the seminar with the view of providing an opportunity for the students of the New Sudan to engage in constructive and quality discussions, and thereby reflect on the critical challenges and opportunities in the implementation of the CPA.
