14 Aug 2008: ISS Seminar, Pretoria: How to Achieve a Lasting Peace in the Niger Delta
ISS Seminar: How to Achieve a Lasting Peace in the Niger-Delta
Pretoria, 14 August 2008
Â
Presented by the African Security Analysis Programme
Â
With the election of Umaru Yar’Adua as a President of Nigeria, there were high expectations that his regime not only would restore the credibility of the Nigerian democratic experiment but also would find a lasting solution to the perennial crisis in the oil-rich region of Niger-Delta. While a number of initiatives were taken in attempt to pacify the region, none has been successful in curbing the spiral of violence. Instead, the conflict has become protracted with recurrent attacks on oil installations and frequent kidnapping of foreign workers. The British Prime Minister’s offer to assist the Federal Government in securing the region was met with contempt and scepticism while the controversies that surround the recently proposed summit on the region highlight the complexities of the challenges facing the Nigerian Government in framing a sustainable solution to the conflict.Â
Â
Is peace possible in Niger-Delta? How Can the government build on the past initiatives to restore peace and stability in Niger-Delta?
Â
The aim of this seminar is to reflect on the nature of the crisis, the past peace initiatives, why they have failed and if the new government in Nigeria could get it right this time.
