ISS Seminar: The Insecurty in Eastern DRC
Pretoria, 6 September 2007
Although the security situation in the DRC has considerably improved in areas such as the Katanga and the Ituri district, there is continuing violence and threats of war in the Kivus. The insecurity particularly in the North Kivu province, caused by the renegade “General” Laurent Nkunda and the military buildup of the Forces ArmésCongolaises (FARDC), has the potential of spilling into South Kivu and Ituri. Another source of insecurity is the FDLR (Front Démocratique de Libération du Rwanda/ Democratic Front for the Liberation of Rwanda), which continues to harass the local population, though on a limited scale. The speakers will address these concerns and propose the way forward for the Democratic Republic of Congo.
