03 Mar 2004: ISS Seminar, Pretoria: Is South Africa Safer Than in 1998? The ISS 2003 National Victim Survey Provides Some Answers SEMINAR: IS SOUTH AFRICA SAFER THAN IN 1998? THE ISS 2003 NATIONAL VICTIM SURVEY PROVIDES SOME ANSWERS Wednesday, 3 March 2004 Presented by the CRIME AND JUSTICE PROGRAMME [Media Statement] [Presentation] In the run up to South Africa’s general elections in April this year, several political parties mention the issue of crime and how it should be dealt with. They focus on increasing the number of police and police visibility. But what is the crime picture in South Africa? Is it increasing or decreasing? Police statistics are not the only indicator of crime levels. The best supplements to police statistics internationally are victim surveys. In 1998, Statistics SA was commissioned by the Department of Safety and Security to undertake the first National Victim Survey. The ISS has recently completed the second National Victim Survey providing the best alternative picture of whether crime has gone up or down. The results of the survey will be presented by researchers from the Crime and Justice Programme at the ISS. A representative from the SAPS will be the respondent. Date: Wednesday, 3 March 2004 Time: 10:30 – 12:30pm Venue: ISS, Block C, Brooklyn Court, Veale Street East, Pretoria (Map) RSVP: Ms Bilkis Omar, email:[email protected] Tel: (012) 346 9500, fax: (012) 460 0998 Parking is available at Brooklyn Mall & ABSA parkades at your own cost.
