Date: 2013-04-23
Venue: NH Danube City
, Vienna
Roundtable discussion hosted by the governments of South Africa and Norway, and the ISS.
The aim of the roundtable is to launch and discuss the recent ISS paper entitled ‘The evolution of organised crime in Africa: towards a new response’. This paper is part of a broader ISS initiative that will analyse the linkages between organised crime and statehood in Africa and explore how policy and operational responses could be better coordinated and strengthened across the continent. The paper examines the key factors that enabled the growth of organised crime in Africa and highlights the trends that make the continent so vulnerable to organised crime. The paper also identifies implications for the future and proposes responses. Roundtable participants will include ambassadors based in Vienna and senior officials from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
Chair: Ambassador, South Africa.
Opening remarks: Ambassador, Norway and Anton du Plessis, Acting Executive Director of the ISS.
ISS will present an overview of the paper ‘The evolution of organised crime in Africa: towards a new response’ by Mark Shaw and Tuesday Reitano.
