Date: 2007-10-08 to Invalid date

Speaker: Bjørn Møller, Senior Researcher, Danish Institute for International Affairs

Chair: Dr Jakkie Cilliers, Executive Director, ISS

The Horn of Africa has long attracted the attention of external players.  Most recently, it has drawn the attention of the US as a potential hotspot of international terrorism, as a consequence of which Washington has launched several programmes, all intended to prevent or defeat terrorism in the Horn. This seminar critically investigates some of the underlying assumptions of these programmes. It has a specific focus on Somalia analysing issues such as nationalism, religion, clanism and state-building.
