SEMINAR: THE SCORPIONS
Thursday, 27 May 2004
Presented by the
Combating organised crime and corruption has become a local and international
priority. The Scorpions were established in 1999 to deal with these offences,
and are generally viewed by the South African public as the ultimate crime
fighters. Yet despite their fame, little is known about the Scorpions,
whose official name is the Directorate of Special Operations (DSO). This seminar
will place the DSO in historical, institutional and international context,
explaining who the members of the DSO are and how they operate. Controversial
issues, including the DSO’s mandate, performance and constitutionality
will also be addressed.
Speakers include:
Advocate Leonard McCarthy: Deputy National
Director of Public Prosecutions and Head of the DSO in the National Prosecuting
Authority of South Africa
Jean Redpath: ISS research consultant
and author of the DSO monograph
