Seminar on Natural Resources and Conflict
Pretoria, 5 June 2007
Organized by the Belgian Government in Collaboration with ISS
During its presidency of the Security Council of the United Nations in June 2007, Belgium intends to hold an open thematic debate in the Council on the subject of “Natural Resources and Conflict”.
Preceding this debate, Belgium is organizing two one-day seminars on the subject.
The Belgian Permanent Representation to the UN will organize the first seminar in New York on 21 May. The Belgian Embassy to South Africa will organize a second seminar on 5 June in Pretoria in collaboration with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS).
The purpose of these events is, to have a broader look at the issue and to have a focused discussion in a more informal setting before the debate in the UN Security Council. These seminars aim to inform the public the nexus between natural resources and conflict, and feed into the UN debate by providing specialized information and views on the issue. They are intended to be interactive, and inclusive by drawing together decision makers, the private sector, academics, the media and NGOs.
This seminar will take place on Tuesday 5 June from 09h00 to 12h50 at the ISS Offices in Pretoria, Brooklyn Court, Veale Street, New Muckleneuk, Pretoria.
We do hope that you are able to attend the event. In the first instance, you could confirm your attendance by contacting Charlene Harry ([email protected]) or Rugare Ncube ([email protected]) or on +27-12-346-9500.
