SEMINAR: CAUSES OF REFUGEE FLOWS IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA: A CRITICAL REVIEW OF THEORY

SEMINAR: CAUSES OF REFUGEE FLOWS IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA:
A CRITICAL REVIEW OF THEORY

Monday, 21 June 2004

Presented by the
AFRICAN SECURITY ANALYSIS PROGRAMME

Speakers:

Dr Erik Melander, Assistant Professor, Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University, Sweden

Dr Magnus Oberg, Associate Professor, Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University, Sweden

Although civil wars and other forms of communal violence have been identified as the principal causes of forced migration, such a generalisation fails to take account of significant variations across cases. In this seminar, the speakers will address this issue and suggest refinements to our conceptualisation of the causes of refugee flows. They will also discuss if the general findings about causes of refugee flows hold specifically in the Sub-Saharan Africa region, or if there appear to be systematic differences between this region and the rest of the world when the causes of refugee flows are concerned.
