Register Online: Launch of the New Issue of the African Security Review entitled “Conflict Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect in Africa”
Addis Ababa, 5 October 2007

The Direct Conflict Prevention Programme (DCP) of the Institute for Security Studies Addis Ababa office would like to cordially invite you to the launch of the new issue of the African Security Review entitled “Conflict Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect in Africa” This issue comes against a backdrop of some appalling human security situations on the continent albeit concerted efforts to redress them, and the African Union’s paradigmatic shift from conflict management to conflict prevention. Within this context, this issueengages themes that highlight the nexus between conflict prevention and the Responsibility to Protect (R2P). Couched in specific African case studies, this issue ventures to explore the conceptual, policy and institutional relationship between the R2P and the conflict continuum. As a result, the issue provides critical insight on how the R2P is conceived within the African Peace and Security Agenda, but most importantly it proposes some recommendations.

The DCP strives to complement and support the work of the African union (AU) particularly on issues of peace and security. This launch is part of the DCP effort at consensus building by providing a platform for sharing information, encouraging policy debates and dialogues on conflict prevention on the continent. The aim is to stimulate quality discussion, in-depth and constructive interaction between participants. To allow for construction interaction, presentations will be introductory remarks aimed at stimulating unconstrained discussion. The DCP public discussions are within framework of the Chatham House Rules.

You are invited to participate in this important discussion. Please forward this invitation to interested colleagues.
