Register Online: ISS Seminar: Western Sahara: Is There Light at the End of the Tunnel
Pretoria, 3 December 2007

Presenter: Issaka K Souaré, Researcher, African Security Analysis Programme, ISS

Since the Spanish withdrawal from Western Sahara in February 1976 and Morocco’s “occupation” of the territory, the conflict that ensued between Rabat and the Polisario Front has proven very divisive in the Maghreb region and the wider African continent. Despite several attempts to settle the dispute, through peace talks, plans and proposals, peace has remained elusive. This seminar will be a launch of an ISS Occasional Paper that analyses these proposals and plans, identifies the stumbling blocks to peace, and suggests a way forward.
