24 October 2007, 10am – 1pm, Hilton Hotel, Addis Ababa
ÂÂ
The Direct Conflict Prevention Programme (DCP) of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) – Addis Ababa office would like to cordially invite you to a public seminar entitled: Prospects for Strengthening Conflict Prevention Strategies in the Central Africa Region. The Central Africa region risks explosion into chaos as conflict in Sudan (Darfur), Chad and Central African Republic feed and sustain each other. The region encapsulates the complexity of protracted conflicts in Africa that includes incomplete peace processes; regional dynamics; foreign interests; weak government mechanisms; war economies; accentuated insecurity that arises from the proliferation of small and light weapons as well as the dire consequences of conflicts including human rights abuses and  a deepening humanitarian crisis.
ÂÂ
Taking the multidimensional United Nations Mission in Central African Republic and Chad (MINUCRAT) as its point of departure, this seminar seeks to engage the following questions: What informs and sustains the regional character of these conflicts? Is MINUCRAT a panacea to resolve conflicts in this region? What are some of the consequences of over-emphasising the regional character of these conflicts? By engaging these questions this seminar aims at policy recommendations and options.
ÂÂ
The DCP strives to complement and support the work of the African union (AU) particularly on issues of peace and security. The ISS Public Seminar Series is part of the DCP effort at consensus building by providing a platform for sharing information, encouraging policy debates and dialogues on the African peace and security agenda. The aim is to stimulate quality discussion, in-depth and constructive interaction between participants. To allow for construction interaction, presentations will be introductory remarks aimed at stimulating unconstrained discussion.
ÂÂ
The panelists will include a representative from the African Union Commission, the Head of Mission of the Embassy of Cameroon in Addis Ababa and a Senior Researcher from the ISS Addis Ababa Office.
