What procedural rights do victims of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity have in national courts in Africa? And when victims have participated in legal proceedings in special tribunals or regular criminal justice systems, what have their experiences been?
This conference, hosted by the ISS and REDRESS Trust, will discuss a report on developing models for victims to participate in national criminal justice processes and the procedural rights of victims. Participants are from prosecutorial authorities and civil society in Senegal, Mail, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic and South Africa.
Discussions will also focus on whether, due to the nature of the crimes being tried, greater victim participation should be considered and if so, under which circumstances.
