ISS Workshop, Cape Town BY INVITATION ONLY: From War to Peace
From War to Peace: Structural preconditions for lasting peace : Learning from South(ern) Africa
The Centre of Criminology at the University of Cape Town and the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) jointly host to a workshop to reflect, from a comparative point of view, on the kinds of factors which make for lasting peace in post‐conflict settings. The discussion will be led by John Braithwaite, an Australian Research Council Federation Fellow and Founder of RegNet (The Regulatory Institutions Network) at the Australian National University, and recipient of a number of international awards including the Stockholm prize in Criminology.
Braithwaite is internationally known for his work in the area of restorative justice, shame management and reintegration in crime prevention. Since 2005 John however has embarked on a project called Peacebuilding Compared. The Project aims through a ‘distinctive form of comparitavism’ to explore the range of factors ‐ structural, proximate and precipitating ‐ which contribute to the onset of war and the emergence of peace. From this quantitative analysis emerges a story of complexity in which a wide range of factors, processes and actors are involved in either top‐down political settlements and/or bottom up attempts at reconciliation.
The aims of the seminar are twofold:
- To consider the comparative lessons which Braithwaite’s research holds for peacebuilding strategies more generally
- To reflect on the structural preconditions for lasting peace in South(ern) Africa more specifically.
